MinterEllison mining expert moves to Sparke Helmore

MinterEllison environment and planning lawyer Nick Ferguson has made the move to Sparke Helmore as the latter’s newest special counsel.

Ferguson commences with the planning, environment and local government team in Sydney. He brings specialist experience in environmental and planning litigation.

He has provided guidance on development and approval strategies, compliance with environmental regulations and mining and resources legislation, remediation of contaminated land, and biodiversity and offsetting obligations. He is also an expert in compulsory land acquisition law and compensation, having advised government and private clients on complex compulsory acquisition claims and land acquisition strategies.

Ferguson has drafted and assisted on commercial agreements within the mining sector, such as agreements for land access, compulsory acquisition, and third-party interface deeds. He has also tackled matters involving compensation for subsidence caused by mining activities. Moreover, he has counted among his clients property developers, environment and planning consultants, and private and state-owned corporations.

Ferguson joins recently promoted litigator Stephanie Barclay in Sparke Helmore’s special counsel ranks. In May, the firm also snapped up Norton Rose Fulbright construction star Alice Chen as a partner.
