DLA Piper's Asia head of investigations has specialist experience in multi-jurisdictional disputes
Former DLA Piper Asia head of investigations Maurice Burke has joined financial and risk advisory solutions provider Kroll as managing director, investigations, diligence and compliance at its APAC practice.
Burke makes the move to Brisbane after 25 years residing in Asia. In addition to heading the investigations practice in Asia, he led the litigation and regulatory team at DLA Piper Singapore.
He has over two decades of experience with high-stakes investigations in Southeast and South Asia. He focuses on multi-jurisdictional disputes, regulatory investigations, fraud, corruption, and crisis management.
Prior to his stint with DLA Piper, Burke took on senior positions at Hogan Lovells and Herbert Smith Freehills, heading up the dispute resolution and regulatory practices in Southeast Asia.
“Maurice Burke is a known quantity here in the sub-continent, and across the region. His ability to effectively assist Indian clients, as well as Indonesian, Vietnamese, Japanese and other client groups enhances our ability to assist multinationals from around the world with their most sensitive and pressing APAC-focused investigations”, said Tarun Bhatia, regional managing director and co-head APAC of Kroll’s investigations, diligence and compliance team.
Burke has worked with multinationals on matters related to financial crime, compliance breaches, and reputational risks. He has tackled cross-border regulatory issues as well, working with government agencies, legal teams, and corporate managers.
“Our clients know that the [Asia] region’s developing markets offer immense opportunities, but can also offer immense risks: fraud, corruption, political risks, and weak compliance standards. Maurice’s steady presence, and lateral approach to investigations and remediation add greatly to our capability in these environments”, said Cem Ozturk, regional managing director and co-head APAC of Kroll’s investigations, diligence and compliance team.
At Kroll, Burke will collaborate with teams in Australia, China, India, Japan and the ASEAN region to boost the company’s strategic investigations capability.
