Maddocks makes JWS' Dr Wolfgang Hellmann its new competition law head

Maddocks has made Johnson Winter Slattery’s (JWS) Dr Wolfgang Hellmann the head of its new competition law practice.

Hellmann logged over 10 years at JWS. His practice focused on merger control, cartel cases and antitrust compliance.

In more than 25 years in the field, he has tackled competition law matters not just in Australia, but in Düsseldorf and Brussels as well. He is dual-qualified to practise in both Australia and Germany.

“Wolfgang’s appointment will significantly strengthen the firm’s focus on consumer and competition law, providing our private and public sector clients with access to his deep knowledge and expertise across this rapidly emerging area of law. Maddocks’ commercial practice already has a leading reputation and Wolfgang’s arrival will further bolster its offering as he leads a new competition law team”, Maddocks CEO David Newman said.

The appointment comes as the new mandatory merger control regime has spurred an uptick in demand for competition law expertise.

“Wolfgang will provide a crucial source of experience and knowledge for our team’s offering to our clients across M&A, private equity and consumer markets – particularly as expected merger reforms will bring a stronger focus on competition law by regulators and other stakeholders”, Maddocks consumer markets sector leader Greg Hipwell said.

Hellmann’s client list has included the ACCC as well as organisations both in Australia and overseas. He will operate from Maddocks’ Melbourne office as a new partner in the corporate and commercial team.
